From Classroom to Career

Meet Margaret Vaessen, a 2024 graduate from Illinois' College of ACES in Agricultural and Consumer Economics. Margaret was an active member of Sigma Alpha and was crowned the 2024 Miss Alpha Mu because of her exemplary qualities of scholarship, leadership, fellowship, and service.

Margaret stepped up and served Sigma Alpha in many different capacities: sisterhood chair, treasurer, and professional development (PD) chair. This fall, Margaret planned a fun-filled and engaging PD trip to the Bloomington area. The itinerary included stops at Ropp Dairy Farm, Illinois Farm Bureau, llinois Corn, and Illinois Soybean.

This summer, Margaret will begin working at Farm Credit Illinois in Mahomet, Il, as an HR Generalist. "I am excited to help aid in the mission of “Helping Farm Families Succeed,” she says.

Here are a few questions/answers to get to know Margaret better:

What has been your favorite part of being in Sigma Alpha?

My favorite part about being part of Sigma Alpha is the community of professional women in agriculture that spans the country. For example, the Department Head of ACE is an Iowa State Sigma Alpha alumni and someone I was able to make a connection with. She even had me babysit her son!

What is your favorite college memory?

My favorite college memory is storming Alma after we made it to the Elite Eight this past season. I was with a group of friends, many from Sigma Alpha, and the excitement was unforgettable.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would love to travel to Australia! I once read a book about Australia and ever since, I’ve wanted to open a bookstore coffee shop on the beaches of Australia.

What is a goal of yours after graduation?

My time at Illinois has been so special to me. My goal after graduating is to stay connected to the friends, professors, and peers that I have met at Illinois.

What is something you wish you knew as a freshman?

If I could tell my freshman self one thing, it would be that it’s okay not to know everything. There is no “right” way of doing things. You will learn and grow, and priorities will change, so don’t worry about not knowing; live in the moment.
