Journey from membership candidate to Madam President

If you would have asked me my freshman year what I thought Sigma Alpha was going to mean to me, I definitely wouldn't have been able to tell you all that it has turned into. From being an escape from reality to being my home away from home, Sigma Alpha is a source of joy for me. When thinking about where I wanted to go as I entered my final position within the chapter, I knew there was likely only one logical step, president. While hesitant at first, I began to think about all the ways I wanted to give back. Going to the chapter and explaining why I was fit for this position, I found it really difficult to put my thoughts on paper. Not because I wasn't excited or prepared, but because to truly put into words what Sigma Alpha has given me would not do it justice. So, until now, it wasn't written anywhere but my brain.

Sigma Alpha Rough President Speech - Nov. 13, 2023

"Last night I was talking to my parents and explain that today was going to be exec elections. My dad's response to that was 'you're not running for president are you,' I wasn't really sure what to say as that was the only position my name was on the ballot for. So logically I responded, 'nope, that's definitely what I'm doing,' and what did he say? Well, he asked the thing that all parents do 'Why? Why would you do that Taylor?' In that moment I couldn't find the words to tell him why, but standing here I began to remember and know why.

As a PNM, as I'm sure you all remember, they ask you in the Leadership interview room 'Can you see yourself holding a leadership position in Sigma Alpha? If so which one?' At the time I said Ag in the Classroom chair, and I already got to do that. But when reflecting my mom reminded me that I came home that weekend or in the weeks after and said, 'hey mom, I'm going to be the president one day' and she thought that was just Taylor's little freshman brain making more than what would likely happen. However, as we've approached this day, I found that even if I hadn't said that out loud in the past two years, that's still what my heart wanted.

So, there's my why, but what would I bring forth? I want to continue to encourage sisterhood within the chapter. When I first joined Sigma Alpha was my home away from home. I didn't have the greatest living situation my first year and so I did everything that I could to be at Sigma Alpha and the girls were beyond welcoming. Somewhere along the line we forgot that so that is my number one goal, to encourage sisterhood among members. I hope that you will see just how much Sigma Alpha means to be and allow me to serve as your president so that I can be the light and continue to grow our sisterhood.

I also know that I am an extremely busy person, but in light of that, of the 7 clubs and RSOs I'm in my leadership positions are coming to an end. I intend to give Sigma Alpha my all and not take as many roles in other organizations moving forward. That is how I will better serve you and me."

That is what I brought forth to the chapter last November and by some grace, they decided that I was to be their next president [freshman Taylor would be so proud]! However, when Jennie asked me to write this out, I was very nervous to pour my heart out on paper. I think that is because it makes this more real and concrete. However, I have found that this is a reminder of why I am here and serving the Sigma Alpha - Alpha Mu chapter in this way. While I am now four months into my presidency and just finding my ground, I remain humble and remember those feelings walking into the first pre-recruitment event in the Fall of 2021. What a wonderful journey I've had in Sigma Alpha! I am forever thankful for all the people, connections, memories, laughter, and tears that this chapter has brought me. I can't wait to see what the final weeks of this spring bring as we begin planning for the fall!
